Tesla Powerwall Warranty Explained: What the 10-Year Powerwall 3 Warranty Covers and How to Make a Claim in California

Tesla's Powerwall 3 limited warranty is a 10-year term that guarantees the battery will be free from defects and will retain at least 70% of its original 13.5 kWh capacity at the end of that period. The warranty applies to both the Powerwall 3 and the Powerwall 3 Expansion, and it runs from the original installation date — not the purchase date and not the date you moved in.

What Tesla's limited warranty actually says

Tesla's Powerwall Limited Warranty (USA), Rev. 2.6, effective May 6, 2026, applies to the Powerwall 2, Powerwall+, Powerwall 3, and Powerwall 3 Expansion, provided they are installed on your site.

The warranty has two main promises: (1) your Powerwall will be free from defects for ten years following its initial installation date, and (2) your Powerwall will have an energy capacity of 13.5 kWh on its initial installation date and will retain energy capacity as shown in the warranty table.

Capacity retention and cycle limits

The capacity guarantee depends on how you use the battery:

For solar self-consumption, time-based control, and backup applications, the warranty guarantees 70% energy retention at 10 years with unlimited cycles. For any application not listed, or any combination that includes one not listed, the same 70% at 10 years applies but with a cap of 37.8 MWh of aggregate throughput.

In practice, the unlimited-cycle tier covers the overwhelming majority of Southern California residential installs — a system running in solar self-consumption, time-of-use optimization, or backup mode all qualifies. For solar self-consumption, time-based control, and backup, cycles are unlimited; for any other use, the warranty is capped at 37.8 MWh of aggregate throughput.

What Tesla will do if the battery fails the warranty

If your Powerwall fails to comply with the warranty, Tesla will repair or replace your Tesla Product with an equivalent product. If Tesla chooses to repair or replace your Tesla Product and the work is performed by a Tesla Certified Installer, the warranty includes reimbursement of reasonable labor costs to that installer. If your Tesla Product is repaired or replaced, the remainder of the original warranty period applies to the repaired or replacement product — under no circumstances will the original warranty period be extended.

What voids or limits the warranty

Tesla's Rev. 2.6 document lists specific exclusions. Warranty coverage does not apply to defects or capacity shortfalls resulting from:

  • Unauthorized modification or repair: Modification or repair of your Tesla Product performed by anyone other than Tesla or a Tesla Certified Installer voids coverage, as does opening of the external casing.

  • Accidents or force majeure: Flood, earthquake, fire, or other events outside the reasonable control of Tesla are excluded.

  • Failure to stay connected and registered: To secure the full 10-year warranty, the Powerwall must be reliably connected to the internet to allow remote firmware upgrades from Tesla. If an internet connection is not established or is interrupted for an extended period and Tesla is unable to contact the owner, the warranty may be limited to 4 years.

Tesla will attempt to contact you if the internet connection is interrupted. If not registered, Tesla may not be able to honor the full ten-year warranty but will honor it for at least four years, subject to other exclusions and limitations.

  • Backup Switch tampering: The warranty does not cover defects resulting from removal of the Backup Switch conduit hub or operation of the manual override switch unless directed to do so by Tesla Support or by your local electric distribution utility.

  • Normal wear and tear, superficial defects, and theft are also excluded per the warranty document.

Transferability: does the warranty follow the house?

Claims can be made by the original end-user or a subsequent owner who provides proof of ownership. This means the warranty transfers when a home sells — the new owner simply needs documentation showing the original purchase and any subsequent ownership transfers. The clock does not reset; the 10-year term still runs from the original installation date.

The installer workmanship warranty: a separate document

Tesla's limited warranty covers the hardware — the battery cells, the integrated inverter inside the Powerwall 3, the Gateway or Backup Switch, and related Tesla Products. It is a different document from your installer's workmanship warranty.

The workmanship warranty, issued by your installing contractor, covers the labor and physical installation: the conduit runs, the wiring connections, the mounting bracket, the breaker work at your panel, and any panel upgrade done at the time of install. Installation companies are typically the only ones responsible for providing workmanship warranties on battery installations.

Tesla covers its solar panel systems with a 10-year workmanship warranty for Tesla-installed systems. If your system was installed by a Tesla Certified Installer, that installer's workmanship terms govern — check your original contract.

At Helios, we back our Powerwall 3 installations with a 10-year workmanship warranty covering our labor, wiring, and mounting work — separate from, and in addition to, Tesla's hardware warranty. Helios is a Tesla Certified Installer.

How to file a Powerwall warranty claim in California

Step 1: Contact your original installer

In order to make a claim under the Tesla Limited Warranty, contact the Tesla Certified Installer who sold you the Powerwall. Your installer has access to Tesla's dealer portal and can open a service ticket on your behalf faster than a cold call to Tesla's general support line. They can also pull your system's commissioning records, which Tesla requires.

Claims require: (i) proof of purchase and ownership transfer, (ii) a description of the defect, and (iii) the Powerwall serial number and installation date. Pull these from your original contract or the Tesla app before you call.

Step 2: If your installer is unreachable

Installers close, merge, or change names. If you are unable to contact the Tesla Certified Installer who sold you your Tesla Product, contact Tesla directly at the address, email address, or telephone numbers identified in the warranty document.

You will need to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number from Tesla by submitting a Service Request Form before returning any product.

Tesla's support page for Powerwall is at tesla.com/support/powerwall. The Tesla app also surfaces a support pathway — if your system was installed by a third-party installer, the Tesla app will display that installer's contact information when you open a support request. For more on navigating Tesla's California support channels, see our guide on Tesla solar customer service and repair in California.

What to gather before you file

  • Proof of purchase: your original installer invoice or Tesla order confirmation
  • Proof of ownership transfer (if you bought the home after install): closing documents or a title transfer showing the address
  • Powerwall serial number: found on the unit label and in the Tesla app under Powerwall → Settings
  • Original installation date: on your permit or commissioning paperwork
  • Description of the issue: app screenshots showing capacity readings, error codes, or outage logs. Note that a low app estimate alone does not prove that a Powerwall has failed its warranty capacity guarantee — Tesla uses its own internal measurement to determine whether the 70% threshold has been breached.

What Tesla covers vs. what your installer covers

Component Covered by Tesla warranty Covered by installer workmanship
Battery cells / defects ✅ Yes —
Integrated inverter (Powerwall 3) ✅ Yes —
Gateway / Backup Switch hardware ✅ Yes (listed Tesla Products) —
Labor when Tesla Certified Installer does the repair ✅ Reimbursed per Tesla policy —
Conduit, wiring, mounting hardware — ✅ Yes
Panel connections and breaker work — ✅ Yes
Damage from unauthorized repair ❌ Excluded —
Damage from force majeure ❌ Excluded —

Under warranty, Tesla generally covers eligible hardware according to the applicable warranty, while labor, travel, permits, and workmanship depend on the installer agreement and local rules. If you have any doubt about which warranty applies to a specific failure, ask both Tesla and your installer to identify the exact warranty section in writing before authorizing any repair.

Powerwall 2 warranty: how it differs

Tesla's current USA warranty document (Rev. 2.6, effective May 6, 2026) covers the Powerwall 2, Powerwall+, Powerwall 3, and Powerwall 3 Expansion under the same ten-year limited warranty umbrella. The core terms — 10 years, 70% capacity retention, unlimited cycles for solar self-consumption and backup — are identical between Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 in the current document.

Powerwall 2 is discontinued for new sales but remains fully warranted through its original 10-year term from your install date.

Tesla's warranty runs 10 years from your system's install date, not from the date PW2 was discontinued for new sales. If your unit was installed in 2021, your warranty runs through 2031.

Tesla continues firmware updates, app support, and warranty service for all PW2 units within their warranty period.

If Tesla replaces a failed PW2 under warranty, they may substitute a PW3 depending on parts availability — confirm this with Tesla directly if it comes up.

California-specific considerations

SCE, SDG&E, and PG&E customers (NEM 3.0 / Net Billing Tariff): The Powerwall's warranty is unaffected by which net metering tariff you're on. However, how aggressively you cycle the battery changes under NEM 3.0 — time-based control and solar self-consumption modes are the dominant strategies, and both qualify for the unlimited-cycle tier of Tesla's warranty. See our NEM 3.0 explained guide and solar vs. battery under NEM 3.0 for how this plays out financially.

LADWP customers: LADWP still offers retail-rate net metering (not NEM 3.0), so battery cycling patterns differ from SCE customers. The Powerwall warranty terms are the same regardless — LADWP's tariff does not affect Tesla's coverage.

SGIP battery incentive: California's Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) residential budget is waitlisted in 2026. SGIP does not affect your Powerwall warranty in any way, but it does affect your upfront cost. There is no federal residential solar or battery tax credit for a 2026 purchase — the 30% residential credit expired December 31, 2025.

Installed cost context: A single Tesla Powerwall 3 installed in Southern California runs approximately $14,500–$18,500; two units run $24,000–$30,000; each Powerwall 3 Expansion adds approximately $8,000–$11,500 installed. Frequently asked questions about the Tesla Powerwall warranty

Does the Powerwall 3 warranty transfer when I sell my home?

A subsequent owner of the Powerwall who provides proof of ownership is also entitled to make Limited Warranty claims. The warranty transfers automatically — you don't need Tesla's permission — but the new owner should have the original purchase records, the serial number, and the installation date on hand. The 10-year clock does not reset at the point of sale.

What happens to my warranty if my installer goes out of business?

If you are unable to contact the Tesla Certified Installer who sold you your Tesla Product, contact Tesla directly using the address, email address, or telephone numbers identified in the warranty document. Tesla's warranty obligation runs directly to you as the product owner, not through the installer. The installer closure does not void or shorten Tesla's coverage.

Will using the Powerwall every day void the warranty?

No. The warranty covers unlimited cycles, meaning you can charge and discharge the battery as aggressively as your usage pattern demands without voiding coverage — provided you're operating in solar self-consumption, time-based control, or backup mode, which covers standard California residential use.

Does the Powerwall need to stay connected to Wi-Fi for the warranty to be valid?

To secure the full 10-year warranty, the Powerwall must be reliably connected to the internet to allow remote firmware upgrades from Tesla. If an internet connection is not established or is interrupted for an extended period and Tesla is unable to contact the owner, the warranty may be limited to 4 years. Keep your Powerwall on your home Wi-Fi or Ethernet and registered with Tesla to protect the full term.

Can a non-Tesla electrician service my Powerwall without voiding the warranty?

Modification or repair of your Tesla Product performed by anyone other than Tesla or a Tesla Certified Installer voids coverage, as does opening of the external casing. Routine electrical work at your main panel that doesn't touch the Powerwall unit itself is generally fine, but any work on the Powerwall, Gateway, or Backup Switch should be done by a Tesla Certified Installer to preserve your warranty. See our solar repair and maintenance page for what that looks like in practice.

How is the Powerwall 3 warranty different from the Powerwall 2 warranty?

Both Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 come with a 10-year warranty. Per Tesla's current USA warranty document (Rev. 2.6, May 2026), the capacity retention guarantee (70% at 10 years) and the unlimited-cycle provision for solar self-consumption and backup are the same for both models. The main practical difference is that Powerwall 2 is discontinued for new sales, so new claims on PW2 units are serviced against existing inventory. For a full technical comparison, see our Powerwall 3 review.

What does Tesla do if my Powerwall fails the 70% capacity test?

If your Powerwall fails to comply with the warranty, Tesla will repair or replace your Tesla Product with an equivalent product. If Tesla chooses to repair or replace your Tesla Product and the work is performed by a Tesla Certified Installer, the warranty includes reimbursement of reasonable labor costs to that installer. Tesla determines whether the threshold has been breached using its own internal diagnostic — not the app's real-time display.
