Most homeowners assume they're a cheap, targeted heating solution — but watt for watt, a space heater is one of the most expensive appliances you can run. Understanding exactly how much power it draws is the first step toward sizing a solar system that actually covers your real load, or deciding whether a battery backup makes sense for your home.


Running watts by heater type, size, and setting

Not every space heater pulls a full 1,500W. Older resistive coil models almost always max out at 1,500W because that's the practical ceiling for a standard 120V/15A household circuit. Newer units with ceramic elements or eco-modes often offer a 750W low setting. Oil-filled radiators are typically 1,500W but cycle on and off, so their effective draw over an hour is closer to 700–900W.

SCE vs. LADWP: why your utility changes everything

If you're an SCE customer, your pain is compounded by Time-of-Use pricing. SCE's TOU-D plans carry a peak window of roughly 4–9 PM, when rates can climb significantly above the blended average. If your space heater is running during that window — which it likely is on a cold December evening — your effective cost per kWh is higher than the ~34–35¢ blended figure. On SCE's TOU-D-PRIME plan, off-peak rates are lower, but that 4–9 PM window is expensive.

LADWP customers have it somewhat better. LADWP still offers retail-rate net metering (not NEM 3.0, which applies only to investor-owned utilities like SCE, PG&E, and SDG&E). LADWP's blended residential rate of ~22¢/kWh is meaningfully lower, so the same 1,500W heater running 8 hours costs about $1.76/day vs. $4.08–$4.20/day on SCE. Over a 90-day winter, that's ~$158 vs. ~$370. Same heater, same house, very different bill.

Other Southern California municipal utilities — Pasadena PWP, Riverside RPU, Anaheim APU, Burbank Water & Power, Glendale Water & Power — each run their own net metering programs and rate structures. How space heaters factor into solar system sizing

Space heaters and battery backup: a poor combination

Here's a hard truth that most solar sales pitches skip: a home battery system is not a practical backup for a space heater.

A single Tesla Powerwall 3, for example, stores roughly 13.5 kWh of usable energy. A 1,500W space heater running at full power would drain that battery in about 9 hours — and that's if nothing else in the house is drawing power. Add a refrigerator, lights, phone chargers, and a router, and you're looking at 6–7 hours of runtime before the battery is depleted.

Battery systems are sized for essential loads during outages: refrigeration, lighting, medical equipment, phone charging, and keeping a router alive. They are not designed to cover high-resistance heating loads for extended periods. If you're in an area prone to SCE PSPS (Public Safety Power Shutoff) events and you want to stay warm during an outage, the right answer is a mini-split heat pump (which moves heat rather than generating it, using 3–5× less electricity for the same warmth) combined with a well-sized battery system.

  • Heated blanket: 50–150W. If you're heating yourself rather than a room, this is the most efficient option by far.
  • Programmable thermostat + central HVAC: If your central system is already paid for, using it on a smart schedule is often cheaper than running a space heater in one room while the rest of the house cools.
