How solar is actually mounted on a tile roof

There are two legitimate methods. A good installer will choose based on your specific tile profile; either way, no tile should ever be ground down or permanently sealed to accommodate a mount — that approach causes long-term leaks and voids most tile warranties.

Method 1: Tile hooks (the most common approach)

A tile hook is a purpose-built stainless-steel bracket that slides under the tile above the mount point, attaches to the roof deck or rafter, and pokes a small foot through the tile course below. The surrounding tiles are lifted temporarily, the hook is flashed properly with lead or EPDM, and the tiles are re-laid around it. The result looks nearly factory — you see only the rail and panels, not any hardware at the tile level.

Best for: S-tile (the classic Spanish barrel profile), W-tile (flat with raised edges), and most concrete profiles.

Method 2: Tile replacement mounts

This is the most important question to answer before signing a solar contract. Installing panels on a roof with 3–5 years of life left means tearing the system down and reinstalling it — at your expense — when the roof fails. A reputable installer will flag this; a less careful one may not.

Signs your tile roof should be re-tiled first:

  • Age: Clay tile lasts 50+ years; concrete tile typically 30–50 years. If yours is approaching or past that range, get a roofing inspection.
  • Cracked or missing tiles: More than a handful of broken tiles suggests the field is degrading.
  • Failing underlayment: The tile itself may look fine, but the felt or synthetic underlayment beneath it is often the first thing to go. A roofer can spot this.
  • Active leaks or staining on the ceiling: Do not put solar on a leaking roof.

Utility matters: SCE vs. LADWP (and why it affects your payback)

This makes pairing a battery with your solar system nearly essential to maximize self-consumption during SCE's 4–9 PM peak window. If you're on LADWP (most of the City of Los Angeles): LADWP is a municipal utility and is not on NEM 3.0.
