What it costs to charge: LADWP vs. SCE.
The install is a one-time number. The charging bill runs for as long as you own the car — and it depends heavily on your utility. LADWP customers pay around 22¢/kWh, which makes home charging cheap almost any hour of the day. SCE customers average closer to 35¢/kWh, with the most expensive electricity landing squarely in the 4–9 PM peak — exactly when most people get home and plug in. The fix costs nothing: schedule the charger for overnight off-peak hours, or point midday solar production at the car instead of exporting it for pennies under NEM 3.0.

- How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

- Why do EV charger installation quotes vary so much?
- Three levers: distance from the electrical panel, spare panel capacity, and whether the charger location needs trenching. A charger mounted next to the panel is the cheapest install there is. A detached garage across the yard on a 100A panel is the most expensive. Same charger, very different job — which is why we do a load calculation before quoting, not after starting.
- Do I need a permit to install a home EV charger?
- Yes. A dedicated 240V circuit is permitted electrical work in every Southern California jurisdiction. It's included in our $600–$1,800 install range, itemized at your city's real fee. Unpermitted charger circuits surface at home sale and in insurance claims — not worth the few hundred dollars saved.
- Is it cheaper to install a NEMA 14-50 outlet instead of a hardwired charger?
- Sometimes modestly — an outlet skips the wall unit. But a hardwired Level 2 charger charges faster, manages the cable, and adds scheduling features that pay for themselves on time-of-use rates. Either way the circuit, breaker, and permit work is nearly identical, so the labor cost is similar. We quote both if you're on the fence.
- How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in Los Angeles?
- Depends on who bills you. LADWP residential rates run around 22¢/kWh — roughly $9–$13 for a typical full charge. SCE averages closer to 35¢/kWh with the priciest window at the 4–9 PM peak, so the same charge can cost noticeably more if you plug in at dinner time. On either utility, scheduling overnight off-peak charging — or charging from your own solar — is the difference-maker.
- Does adding an EV charger require a panel upgrade?
- Not always. A Level 2 charger wants a 40–60A circuit, and many older homes on 100A panels don't have the headroom — but a smart load-management device is often far cheaper than the $1,500–$3,500 panel upgrade, sharing capacity dynamically instead of expanding it.
