Solar panels for clay & Spanish tile roofs
If you have a clay or Spanish barrel tile roof and want solar in Southern California, you have one of the most beautiful — and most demanding — roofs to work on. These tiles are stunning but brittle, and they are everywhere on SoCal Spanish-style homes. Solar absolutely works on clay tile; it just takes a skilled crew and the right tile-specific hardware to do it without cracking tiles or creating leaks.

Why Helios for clay roofs
Tile is where installer skill shows the most, and it is why a lot of homeowners come to us after a cheaper bid balked at their roof. Helios installs on every roof type, clay tile very much included, and Taylor's engineering rigor carries straight into how we flash and waterproof each tile penetration. Our crews walk tile carefully, replace cracked tiles as a matter of course, and use flashed tile-replacement bases rather than shortcuts that leave gaps. The work is backed by our workmanship warranty — important on a roof where sloppy work is expensive to fix.

How we install on clay
On clay tile we install at each mount point by removing the tile, fastening a flashed tile-replacement base (a metal flashing that takes the place of a tile and seals into the underlayment and surrounding courses) or, where appropriate, a tile hook that routes under the tile to structure. We then re-lay the original tiles around the mount or substitute matching tiles, so the finished roof looks intact and stays watertight. The skill is in walking and handling the brittle tiles without cracking them, getting the flashing watertight under the courses above, and keeping the array plane even across an uneven tile surface. It is more hands-on and slower than shingle — and that is exactly why crew experience matters.
What it means for cost
Clay tile costs more for solar than shingle. Every mount point means removing tile, installing flashed hardware, and relaying or replacing tiles — real added labor, plus an allowance for tiles that break and need substitutes. Expect clay tile to sit toward the higher end of the typical ~$2.40–$3.25 per watt range (before incentives, depending on size, equipment, and roof complexity), with barrel/S-tile generally costing more than flat profiles. The premium buys a clean, leak-free job on a fragile roof. Note: the 30% federal solar tax credit expired December 31, 2025.
What to watch for
The big risks on clay tile are cracked tiles and hidden leaks from poor flashing. Ask how the installer flashes each penetration (flashed tile-replacement bases and proper tile hooks, not foam blobs or caulk over a tile), whether they carry replacement tiles to match yours, and how they handle breakage. Matching discontinued tile colors can be a challenge, so it is worth sourcing spares. We inspect tile condition, confirm underlayment life, and budget for tile replacement up front so there are no surprises.
Clay & Spanish (Barrel) Tile solar FAQs
- Can you install solar on a clay or Spanish tile roof without cracking the tiles?
- Yes — with experienced crews and the right hardware. We walk and handle the brittle tiles carefully, use flashed tile-replacement bases or proper tile hooks at each mount, and replace any tile that breaks. Some breakage is normal on barrel tile, which is why we budget replacements into the job.
- Does a clay tile roof cost more for solar?
- Yes. Removing, flashing, and relaying or replacing tile at every mount adds labor and materials, so clay tile sits toward the higher end of the typical ~$2.40–$3.25 per watt range. Barrel/S-tile usually costs more than flat tile. The 30% federal tax credit expired December 31, 2025.
- How do you keep a tile roof from leaking around the mounts?
- We use flashed tile-replacement bases that seal into the underlayment and tuck under the courses above, so water sheds over the flashing just as it would over a tile. We avoid caulk-and-foam shortcuts, which fail over time.
- What if you cannot match my exact tile color?
- We source matching or close replacement tiles before the install and, when a profile is discontinued, we discuss options with you in advance. Sourcing spares up front avoids mismatched patches later.
